2. Furnas do Enxofre

The Furnas do Enxofre are one of the places where you can best appreciate that Terceira is still a very much alive volcanic island. This fumarolic field, declared a Regional Natural Monument, has more than twenty active fumaroles that release volcanic gases at varying temperatures, creating a landscape unlike anywhere else on the island.

The visit to Furnas do Enxofre follows a pedestrian circuit of wooden boardwalks, perfectly integrated into the surroundings and designed both to make the route easy to follow and to protect the ecosystem. The itinerary is circular, approximately 1 km long, and straightforward, with no elevation changes or difficulties. In total, it usually takes between 30 and 40 minutes, depending on how much time you spend observing the fumaroles.

During the walk you'll see steam rising directly from the ground, areas stained yellow by sulfur, and very particular vegetation adapted to these extreme conditions. Along the way, you'll notice that "unpleasant" sulfur smell, although we consider it part of the experience and not really bothersome. Throughout the circuit there are informational panels that help you understand what you're looking at and why this place is so special.

The Furnas do Enxofre are located on the Central Plateau of Terceira, very close to other must-see spots such as Algar do Carvão, Gruta do Natal, Negro Lagoon, or the starting point of the PRC01TER trail through the Mistérios Negros. Given its location and the fact that it is a short and free visit, we recommend including this spot as a must-stop on any route through this part of the island.
