In this article we'll tell you where to stay in Terceira, one of the most surprising islands in the Azores. We'll explain the best areas to sleep on the island, with their pros and cons, and what kind of trip fits best with each one, so that by the time you finish reading you'll know exactly where to book.
In our opinion, since Terceira is a small island you can cross in under an hour, it's best to pick a single base for your stay. Plus, unlike other islands, here there are two pretty clear urban hubs where it makes the most sense to stay: Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória; the rest are villages and rural areas with tons of charm, but without as many services.

To make your choice easier, in both bases we recommend different options for every budget. We use a simple system of budget symbols ($, $$, or $$$) so you can tell at a glance which range each one falls into. And if you want to get to know the island inside out before deciding, take a look at our Terceira travel guide.

Where to stay in Terceira?
The first thing you should know is that Terceira is a small island, around 150 square miles (roughly 25 miles long by 10.5 miles wide), so you can cross it from end to end in 30 to 60 minutes by car. The practical takeaway? That a single base is more than enough and it's not worth switching hotels every couple of days.
That's why choosing where to stay isn't so much about distances (everything is reasonably close) but about the services and the vibe you want as your home base at the end of the day.

And the thing is, in Terceira there are only two urban hubs, Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória. The rest are villages and beautiful rural areas, but they work more as a complement, not as an equivalent base. That's the reason, to be honest, why in this article we give you two main areas and the rest as alternatives.
For us, the best base for your stay in Terceira is Angra do Heroísmo, with Praia da Vitória as a great alternative if what you're after is the beach and a family-friendly vibe.

1. ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO, the best base for your stay in Terceira
Angra do Heroísmo is, for us, the best base for your stay in Terceira. It's the capital and, on top of that, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. In fact, we think it isn't just a simple place to sleep, but a must-visit spot in Terceira.

Why do we pick it as number 1? Well, because it has the widest and most varied range of accommodation, the best restaurant and bar scene on the island, and the most central location for getting around Terceira. And being a city, it has life all year round.
Every day, when you come back from your outings, you can keep enjoying Terceira by wandering aimlessly around Angra, where you can visit spots like the Jardim Duque da Terceira, Monte Brasil, or Baía do Fanal.

You can also enjoy top-notch terceirense cuisine (don't leave without trying the alcatra, the lapas, or the fresh fish), and it's also the best place to go out a little at night, within how quiet the island is.

And although Praia da Vitória is famous for its big sandy beach, the truth is that Angra also has its own sandy beach right in the center, the Prainha, right next to the Marina. It's small, with calm waters and very convenient for families, so you can stay in the capital and take a dip without getting in the car.

Another advantage of staying in Angra is that the best excursions on the island leave from its marina, like whale and dolphin watching, snorkeling at the Cabras Islets, or swimming with dolphins respectfully.

And does it fit you? If it's your first time in Terceira, if you're drawn to history and culture, if you're looking for comfort and atmosphere, or if you're traveling as a couple, Angra is your place.
Recommended places to stay in Angra do Heroísmo:
THE SHIPYARD - ANGRA ($$), a design aparthotel next to the marina, with spacious apartments, a fully equipped kitchen, and a nautical-industrial look that pays tribute to the neighborhood's old shipyard. The best part: it has free private parking (a luxury in Angra), bikes, and its own restaurant. You can book here.

CASA DE FORO - APARTAMENTOS TURÍSTICOS ($$), tourist apartments in a historic building right in the heart of Angra (you couldn't get more central), with a kitchen and a terrace. Ideal if you like having your own space and feeling at home, three minutes from the Prainha. You can book here.

AÇORES AUTÊNTICO BOUTIQUE HOTEL ($$), a small, very family-run boutique (just a few rooms), recently renovated and facing the Sé. Here the plus is the warm, personal service from the owners and the feeling of living the city's daily life among locals. You can book here.

BOUTIQUE HOTEL TEATRO ($$), a boutique with lots of charm and carefully curated décor on a pedestrian alley a step away from the Sé and the Jardim Duque da Terceira. It has an outdoor pool, a spa (sauna, jacuzzis, hammam) and, take note, its own parking, something pretty unusual in the center. You can book here.

AZORES BOOK HOTEL ($$$), a spa hotel with a literary concept in an 18th-century building, with its library of thousands of books, its Library Bar, indoor and outdoor pools, and a wellness area. A pleasant walk from the center and perfect for unwinding. You can book here.

TOREL TERRA BRAVA & SPA ($$$), if you want to treat yourself, this five-star luxury boutique in a restored historic building is the most exclusive place to stay in the center: a spa with sauna, indoor and outdoor pools, and a very well-rated restaurant, steps from the Sé and the Prainha. You can book here.

São Mateus da Calheta, right next to Angra
If you want the convenience of Angra but with a slightly quieter, more seafaring feel, another very good option is São Mateus da Calheta. It's a freguesia attached to Angra (about 2.5 miles, a 10-minute drive), practically an extension of the city.

It's a charming fishing village, with the largest artisanal fishing port on the island and, as you can imagine, really good fish brought in fresh. It's also cheaper than Angra.
It's the perfect spot if you want to sleep close to everything but wake up with the sea right next to you. In fact, one of our favorite places to stay on the whole island is here, the Farol Guesthouse:
FAROL GUESTHOUSE ($), a cozy and beautifully decorated guesthouse (recently renovated), with a family-run feel you can really tell is genuine, a great breakfast, a terrace, and a shared kitchen. For us it's one of those gems with a value-for-money ratio that's hard to beat, a stone's throw from Angra and the fish from the port. One of our favorites on the island! You can book here.

2. PRAIA DA VITÓRIA, the best option if you want a beach
Praia da Vitória is the island's second city, on the east coast, and it has Lajes Airport practically right next door. Its big calling card is the Praia Grande, the largest sandy beach in Terceira.

What makes it interesting as a base? That here you have a real sandy beach, a coastal, family-friendly vibe, and the airport just steps away (handy if you arrive late or leave early). Plus, it's not just beach: it has a pretty historic center, a marina, and a nice seafront promenade.

IMPORTANT! If you stay in Praia da Vitória in early August, you'll be right in the heart of the island's biggest celebration. The Festas da Praia are one of the great summer festivals in Terceira and the Azores. They're held during the first half of August, over about eleven days, and draw thousands of people. It's a fantastic plan if you're into it… but, precisely for that reason, book well in advance.

So, if what you want is beach and sun, if you're interested in having the airport nearby, or if you feel like experiencing the festive August atmosphere, Praia da Vitória is for you. It also has some cheaper options than Angra.
What are the downsides? Well, that it's at one end of the island (the east), so it's less central than Angra for excursions, and that it has less life and fewer options than the capital.
Recommended places to stay in Praia da Vitória:
ROYAL BEACH HOSTEL ($), a central, modern hostel (vintage style, opened in 2018) with shared dorms and also private suites with a bathroom, a shared kitchen, and breakfast with Azorean products included. The cheapest option, steps from the Praia Grande and very close to the airport. You can book here.

NUNES PRAIA ($), a very well-equipped family vacation home in the center of Praia, with a full kitchen, a washer/dryer, and a terrace with a barbecue and panoramic 360º views of the city, the mountains, and the sea. 3-4 minutes from the Praia Grande and ideal for families or groups. You can book here.

ATLÂNTIDA MAR HOTEL ($$), a modern hotel right on the seafront promenade, with balcony rooms and sea views, an outdoor pool, a spa, and a kids' area. It's right next to the sandy beach and five minutes from the airport, so it's super family-friendly and convenient. You can book here.

3. Other areas: Biscoitos and the south coast
Beyond Angra and Praia, there are beautiful areas to stay, but we want to be honest about why they're not our main recommendation: they have little accommodation, they're more isolated, there are fewer services nearby, and a car is essential. In exchange, they win on nature and calm, and since the island is small, they're still close to everything.

Biscoitos (north coast). Famous for its natural pools of black basalt and for its strong Verdelho winemaking tradition, with its curraletas and the Museu do Vinho. It's the ideal area if you're after nature, wine, and being close to the most famous natural pools in Terceira.

South coast of natural pools (Porto Martins, Porto Judeu, Salga). Villages that are fishing-oriented and very local, with natural pools and views of the Ilhéus das Cabras. Porto Martins, for example, is about 4.5 miles from Praia and in an intermediate position between Angra and Praia, which makes it easy to explore both cities.

Want to sleep in one of these areas? Check out what's available in accommodation in Biscoitos, perfect if you're drawn to the north coast with its wine and natural pools, or in accommodation on the south coast, near Porto Judeu and Porto Martins. That said, since there are fewer options around here, the sooner you book, the better.
Which is the best area for your stay in Terceira? - OUR EXPERIENCE
For us, staying in Angra do Heroísmo is a real privilege, and it's also the best option for the vast majority of people. Sleeping inside a World Heritage city, heading out in the morning to a historic center of calçada and colorful houses, having the best restaurants nearby, a little beach right in the center, and the perfect position for getting around the island… it's hard to ask for more. If you ask us, go for Angra or, if you want that seafaring feel right next to the capital, our beloved São Mateus da Calheta. You won't regret it!
That said, Praia da Vitória has its audience and we stand by it too. In fact, it's our recommendation if you prioritize the beach. It might be a better option if you're traveling with kids or if you're after a more family-friendly vibe. It's also a good choice if you want to have the airport nearby. And if you happen to come in early August, staying there puts you right in the heart of the Festas da Praia, which are quite an experience in themselves.
And that's it for our article on where to stay in Terceira! We hope it helps you choose the best area for you.
