Angra Heroísmo 1

1. Historic Center of Angra do Heroísmo

Angra do Heroísmo is the most iconic city on Terceira Island and a true historical treasure of the Azores. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, its old town is famous for its cobblestone streets, squares, and buildings that preserve centuries of history, from the 16th to the 18th century.

The historic center of Angra is perfect for exploring on foot at a leisurely pace, as in about 2 to 3 hours you will have been able to visit all the landmark sites. What we love most is the feeling of traveling back in time, walking among palaces, churches, and convents that survived (or were rebuilt) after the 1980 earthquake.

If you explore the old town on foot, these are the spots you can't miss:

1. Cathedral of Santo Salvador
Built in the late 16th century over an earlier Gothic church, this cathedral is one of the most important religious buildings in Angra. Its interior combines Baroque elements and historical details that reflect the religious and maritime life of the island. Admission is free.

2. Igreja da Misericórdia
A 16th-century church located near the Vasco da Gama statue. Its blue and white façade is one of the most photographed features of the historic center and serves as a visual landmark as you move through the surrounding streets.

3. Vasco da Gama Statue
This monument pays tribute to the famous navigator. It is located in Praça Velha, the main square of the historic old town. Angra was for centuries a mandatory stopover for ships returning from the Indies, which explains the presence of the navigator here.

4. Port of Angra
The port is one of the most lively corners of the city. Here you can stroll among boats, grab a drink at a terrace overlooking the bay, and enjoy the views of
Monte Brasil. Right next door is the Prainha Swimming Area, a great spot for a quick swim when it's hot.
From the port, the island's main maritime excursions also depart, such as
whale watching or the chance to swim with dolphins.

5. Palácio dos Capitães Generais
Located in the heart of the old town, this palace reflects the political and military importance that Angra held during the Age of Discovery and Portuguese navigation. Today it serves as the official residence of the President of the Republic when visiting the islands. The exterior and some areas of the garden are open to visitors.

6. Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo
This church stands out for its historical value and elegant interior decoration, making it one of the oldest churches in Angra, with a well-preserved Baroque interior. It's worth stepping inside for at least a few minutes.

7. Museums of Angra do Heroísmo
The MAH – Museum of Angra do Heroísmo is the most comprehensive, with exhibitions on the history of Terceira, the geography of the Azores, and contemporary art. Also worth visiting are the Museu Vulcanoespeleológico and the Centro de Ciência de Angra do Heroísmo, which offer an educational look at the island's volcanoes, nature, and science.

From the historic center, you can walk over to the Duque da Terceira Garden, a landscaped space in the Portuguese Romantic style, and climb up to Alto da Memória, an obelisk in honor of D. Pedro IV. From there, spectacular views open up over the city and Monte Brasil, the dormant volcano that dominates the bay and adds another natural and historical dimension to the city.
