Alto da memoria

3. Alto da Memória to Don Pedro IV

The Alto da Memória to Don Pedro IV is located at the highest point of the Duque de Terceira Garden and marks an important moment in the history of the island. The obelisk was built in 1856 using stones from the old Castelo dos Moinhos, in memory of the visit of D. Pedro IV during the Portuguese Civil War.

The first stone placed was one that the emperor stepped on when he landed in 1832, a detail that we found very special and that connects the monument to one of the most important moments in Portuguese history.

From the Alto da Memória, you get very sweeping views of Angra do Heroísmo, Monte Brasil, and the Cabras Islets. We were there one day after the rain and the city looked incredibly clear and colorful — it really left us in awe. You can also get a great sense of how the city is organized around the port and its streets, making it a spot that helps you get a general feel for Angra before exploring it on foot.

The obelisk platform has several levels and walls to lean against, from where you can take in the city from different angles. You can walk up from the Duque de Terceira Garden, a very pleasant stroll among trees and cobblestone paths, or drive up from the Castelo de São Luís Square. Beyond the views, we also enjoyed looking at the structure of the obelisk itself — simple yet elegant, understated but clearly a monument with history.

For us, the Alto da Memória is a must-see spot to take in Angra from above, so we recommend spending at least 30 minutes there.
