Terceira is, for us, one of the most surprising islands in the Azores. With this 4-day itinerary for Terceira you'll cover almost the entire island, making the most of your time and with a clear plan for each day.
We've organized this itinerary so you don't drive around more than you need to, following the structure of our Terceira guide by areas. It's designed for anyone who has 4 full days on the island, arriving the day before and leaving on the last day in the afternoon (or the next morning). By the way! We're assuming you're staying in Angra do Heroísmo, so the routes are planned from there. Either way, distances in Terceira are so short that you won't notice much difference if you stay somewhere else.
DAY 1 of your Terceira in 4 days trip
PLACES TO VISIT:
We're starting strong, through the volcanic heart of Terceira, the Central Plateau, where some of the island's most impressive sights are concentrated — and, on top of that, very close to one another.
DAY 1 MORNING - TERCEIRA IN 4 DAYS
Start the day with the Mistérios Negros Trail (PRC01 TER), our favorite on the island. It sets off from the Negro Lagoon parking lot, right across from Gruta do Natal, and crosses a one-of-a-kind cryptomeria forest. If you're only going to do one trail in Terceira, make it this one.
When you finish, spend some time at the Negro Lagoon, a small lake surrounded by forest, with Serra de Santa Bárbara and Pico Gaspar in the background. Beneath its waters run the lava tubes of Gruta do Natal, which you'll see later.
A few minutes away by car are the Furnas do Enxofre, one of the spots where you can best tell that Terceira is still a living volcanic island. It's a field of more than twenty active fumaroles (a Regional Natural Monument) that you walk through on a wooden boardwalk loop of just under 0.6 miles, flat and free, in about 30–40 minutes. You'll see steam rising from the ground and areas stained yellow by sulfur.
If you feel like a quiet stop, the Patas Lagoon is very close by, a lake inside a forest reserve with a picnic area (tables and restrooms) and ducks and geese strolling along the shore, which is how it got its name. It's a good place to grab a bite while you wait for Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal to open, since they only open in the afternoon.
For lunch, the most convenient option is a picnic right at Patas Lagoon (there are no restaurants on site). If you'd rather have a table, about 10 minutes away by car you'll find one of our favorites, Taberna Roberto.
DAY 1 AFTERNOON - TERCEIRA IN 4 DAYS
After lunch, it's time to literally go inside the island. The Gruta do Natal is a lava tube of almost 2,300 feet, flat and easy to walk through, known as the "Christmas cave" because of the masses held inside it since 1969.
And the Algar do Carvão is a unique experience you can't miss. You'll go down more than 300 steps to about 295 feet deep to get inside a volcano more than 3,000 years old, with its lava walls and a small lagoon at the bottom.
IMPORTANT! Gruta do Natal and Algar do Carvão only open in the afternoon. On top of that, Algar do Carvão is open on a conditional basis while work on its new Visitor Center is being finished, so it may close occasionally without notice: check its official website before you go. Your best bet is to buy the combined Algar do Carvão + Gruta do Natal ticket (€15).
To wrap up the afternoon, head up to the Serra de Santa Bárbara Viewpoint, Terceira's highest point (about 3,350 feet). From here a huge panorama of the interior opens up and, on clear days, you can see São Jorge and Pico. It's an area where clouds gather a lot, so if you arrive and it's overcast, wait a few minutes — it usually clears up.
On the way back toward Angra, if you feel like a swim, you can stop at the Cinco Ribeiras Swimming Area or the Negrito Swimming Area, two areas of protected, easy-access natural seawater pools.
If you don't feel like swimming, head over to São Mateus da Calheta, the most seafaring village on the island, with a charming fishing port at sunset where you can have good fish for dinner (for example, at Beira Mar).
And if you get hungry a little earlier, right in Cinco Ribeiras you'll find Queijo Vaquinha, an artisan cheese shop that works with milk from their own farm. Order a small board to sample (the traditional one, the Ilha Terceira and the spicy one, our favorite) with a glass of wine on their terrace.

DAY 2 of your Terceira in 4 days trip
PLACES TO VISIT:
Today we devote the day to the north coast, a string of natural lava pools (some of the best on the island, in our opinion) and viewpoints by the sea.
DAY 2 MORNING - TERCEIRA IN 4 DAYS
Start with a quick stop at Matias Simão Peak, a small volcanic cone in the Altares area. You leave the car at the end of a dirt track and walk up for about 10 minutes. From the top (about 500 feet) you'll see green fields divided by stone walls with the ocean right beside them, and almost certainly no one else around.
Then head down to the coast to enjoy its natural pools. The most famous are the Biscoitos Natural Pools, lava pools sheltered from the waves, with clear water and lots of fish (bring your snorkeling goggles), around 70 °F in summer and with lifeguards, showers, a bar and free parking. That said, they get very crowded, so arrive before 10:00 a.m.
A few minutes away are the Quatro Ribeiras Natural Pools and, we'll confess, we like them even more, because there's usually far fewer people. They have crystal-clear water, a built pool that's ideal for going with kids, and the lovely Miradouro dos Moinhos right next door. You choose where to swim, but if you're after some peace and quiet, this is our recommendation.
Before lunch, stop by the Wine Museum in Biscoitos, which is free and tells the story of the tradition of Verdelho, the island's most famous variety, among volcanic stone walls.
For lunch, we strongly recommend Restaurante Caneta, in Altares. It means doubling back a little, but it's very close to Biscoitos and serves what is, for us, the best Alcatra in Terceira, the island's traditional dish. That said, book ahead, as it's in high demand.
DAY 2 AFTERNOON - TERCEIRA IN 4 DAYS
Continue along the north coast to Calheta dos Lagadores, a small peninsula of natural pools in black volcanic rock, ideal for snorkeling.
Right next door are some WWII military trenches, which you can explore for free along their corridors dug into the basalt while you look out at the sea they once protected.
From here, you decide the plan. If you feel like keeping up the swimming, stay longer at these pools. And if you'd rather walk, we suggest the Baías da Agualva Trail (PR02 TER), a beautiful coastal walk of 2.4 miles (round trip, about 2 hours) that reaches the Alagoa Viewpoint, with lava cliffs and a completely wild pebble beach. If you don't feel like doing the whole thing, you can just do one stretch of the trail.
To end the day, another great swimming spot in the north is the Escaleiras Swimming Area, in Vila Nova. It has a wide concrete platform, water access via metal stairs, a shallow natural pool and areas to swim, plus a bar and very good coastal views from above.

DAY 3 of your Terceira in 4 days trip
PLACES TO VISIT:
Today we explore the east coast from the south, starting with the viewpoints over the Cabras Islets and working our way up the coast, stopping at natural pools and at some of the most important towns, before finishing the day at the best viewpoint on the island.
DAY 3 MORNING - TERCEIRA IN 4 DAYS
The Cabras Islets are two volcanic islets off the south coast (the Ilhéu Grande and the Ilhéu Pequeno), the largest in the whole archipelago and one of the most recognizable images of Terceira. Access to them is protected, so the best way to see them up close is from the sea, with a boat tour, a whale and dolphin watching tour that gets close to the islets or by snorkeling in their waters.
From land, the best way to enjoy them is stopping at several viewpoints as you go along with the car. Start at the Fajã do Fisher, a lava platform with a sun deck and a small viewpoint with a great panorama of the islets.
Continue to the Cruz do Canário Viewpoint, in Porto Judeu, which to us has the best views of the Islets (it even has a swing facing them). And finish with the Maria Augusta de Castro Viewpoint, with yet another perspective over the coast.
In this same area is the Gruta das Agulhas, a lava tube formed when the lava flow from Algar do Carvão reached the sea. You can't go inside, but by going down the stairs at its entrance you can see it from the outside and, along the way, get another good view of the islets (we'll leave the exact location on the map).
If you feel like a swim, stop at the Salga Natural Pools, a small sheltered bay with a tidal pool that fills with the tide and a concrete pool, ideal for swimming without waves. It's free, has a bar across from it and, right next door, the remains of the Forte das Caravelas. Even if the day isn't right for the water, it's worth stopping by for the views.
Whether or not you do the trail, the idea is to keep heading up the east coast. You'll reach Salgueiros Beach, a quiet pebble beach, with a natural pool and a grassy area with picnic tables, where you won't find crowds.
Then, a must-stop at Porto Martins and its natural pools: the Porto Martins Pools (the largest), the Baía das Canas (calmer and shallow) and the Poça do Porto de São Fernando (more intimate and sheltered). Stay as long as you like depending on how much you feel like swimming.
For lunch you can eat in Porto Martins or in Praia da Vitória, whichever you prefer. If you go to Praia da Vitória, we strongly recommend O Mundo à Mesa, which is a bit away from the center, but really worth it and you'll surely think about going back.
DAY 3 AFTERNOON - TERCEIRA IN 4 DAYS
Spend some time in Praia da Vitória, one of the liveliest towns on the island, with a nice seafront promenade and some of Terceira's few sandy beaches (with a Blue Flag), like Praia Grande. It's a good place to rest and take a swim. To see it all from above, head up to the Miradouro do Facho, which you can reach by car.
By the way! If you visit Terceira in August, don't miss the Praia da Vitória festivities: around 10 days with fireworks, concerts and parades that bring together almost the whole island. They're among the best festivities in the Azores.
And on the way back toward Angra, leave for last what is, for us, the best viewpoint in Terceira: the Serra do Cume Viewpoint. From its wooden platform, more than 1,770 feet up, you can see the famous "patchwork quilt," the fields divided by volcanic stone walls and hydrangea hedges that form a mosaic you've probably never seen anywhere else. If you can, go at sunset to end the day in style.

DAY 4 of your Terceira in 4 days trip
PLACES TO VISIT:
The last day arrives and we devote it to Angra do Heroísmo and its surroundings. One tip: if you're flying back from the airport this same afternoon, we've tried to make it not a swimming day (if you swim and then can't shower, it's a hassle). If instead you have the whole day, go ahead and swim at the pools and beaches we point out for you.
And if you're staying in Angra, you've most likely already been seeing the city at the end of the previous days, but if you haven't, or you want to see it at a relaxed pace, we think it's worth dedicating the morning to it.
DAY 4 MORNING - TERCEIRA IN 4 DAYS
If there's one experience you can't miss, it's whale and dolphin watching. The tours set off from the port of Angra and last about three hours sailing along the south coast, in a way that's respectful to the animals. With luck you'll see dolphins, pilot whales and even enormous blue whales. It's a great morning plan and, on top of that, you don't get wet.
Back on land, get lost in the historic center of Angra, a World Heritage Site since 1983. In two or three hours on foot you can see the essentials, like the Praça Velha with the statue of Vasco da Gama, the Cathedral of Santo Salvador, the blue-and-white façade of the Igreja da Misericórdia and the imposing Palácio dos Capitães-Generais.
And if you don't want to miss a thing, you can explore it with this guided tour of the center of Angra.
Very close by you have the Duque de Terceira Garden, founded in 1882, with century-old araucarias and the curious Tanque do Preto, and at its highest point the Alto da Memória, an 1856 obelisk with one of the best views of the city.
For lunch, in Angra we recommend Fumeiro de São João or, for something more casual and budget-friendly, A Barrica.
DAY 4 AFTERNOON - TERCEIRA IN 4 DAYS
Spend the afternoon at Monte Brasil, an extinct volcano connected to the city that forms a peninsula full of viewpoints, with views of the bay, the Cabras Islets and, on clear days, all the way to São Jorge and Pico.
Inside it is the Fortress of São João Baptista, one of the largest in Portugal. If you want to see it from the inside, it's visited with a guide and prior booking in small groups, but if you're short on time, just peeking from the outside during your loop around Monte Brasil is enough.
You can go up by car or on foot via the PRC04 TER trail, although we love discovering it with a guided e-bike tour, which gets you comfortably to corners that are harder to reach on foot while you pick up historical details along the way.
If you have time left in the afternoon and you can swim, head over to the Prainha Swimming Area, the only sandy beach in the bay of Angra, or to Fanal Bay, more natural and wild, with beautiful views of Monte Brasil.
And when it's time to head to the airport, make one last stop at the Humberto Delgado Viewpoint, next to the Lajes Air Base, the perfect spot to watch the planes land and take off. It's a nice way to end the trip and it's right on your way. (If you leave on day 5 in the morning, you can save this viewpoint for then, since it's further north, next to the airport.)
