Let's start with our selection of the best trails in Terceira!

Misterios Negros (PRC01TER) - The Best Hiking Trails in Terceira, Azores

CENTRAL, NORTHERN AND NORTHWESTERN PART OF THE ISLAND:

The central and northwest area of Terceira is, for us, the most surprising side of the island: the volcanic interior, with its cones, lagoons, and caves, and a rugged, almost virgin north coast. It's no coincidence that our two favorite trails in Terceira are found here. Let's get to know them!

1. Mistérios Negros Trail, our favorite in Terceira

We'll start with what is, hands down, the best trail in Terceira for us: the PRC01TER - Mistérios Negros. If you're only going to hike one trail on the whole island, make it this one. It's truly incredible and you'll pass through landscapes that, almost certainly, you've never seen before.

Misterios Negros (PRC01TER) - The Best Hiking Trails in Terceira, Azores

The route starts deep in the island's interior, very close to the Negro Lagoon and Gruta do Natal, among heather and cryptomeria trees. As you go, you head into a forest of Azorean cedar and cross an area with small hidden lagoons until you reach the most special part of the trail: the trachytic volcanic cones, bare rock domes that formed in the 1761 eruption and give the landscape a truly singular look. That stretch alone is worth the trip.

About the difficulty, let us explain: officially it's rated as “difficult,” but we don't want that to put you off. There's one short, slightly demanding stretch where you'll need to use your hands to get through, but nothing you can't handle if you're even somewhat used to walking. The rest of the route is very easy-going. That said, since there's the occasional damp stretch, we recommend shoes with good grip and clothes you don't mind getting dirty.

IMPORTANT! The weather in the island's interior can change fast. Download the GPS track from the official trail page before you set out and, if the day is very overcast, consider saving it for another time: a big part of this trail's magic is in the views.

2. Baías da Agualva Trail, the wildest stretch of the north coast

Our second essential is the PR02TER - Baías da Agualva, perfect for getting to know Terceira's north coast. It's an out-and-back route, easy and very pleasant, running between the villages of Agualva and Quatro Ribeiras, inside a protected area of the Terceira Nature Park.

The trail descends from the Canada da Alagoa parking area toward the coast, and here's where it gets good: you'll come across small bays, cliffs up to 70 meters high, and rock formations with columnar jointing that look spectacular, sculpted by volcanic activity over the past thousands of years. It's an area rich in endemic vegetation and seabirds like the shearwater, so always tread with respect.

Best of all, you'll be able to enjoy these cliffs almost completely alone, something that's nearly impossible on other Azorean islands. And there's one more reason to do it: this trail is the best way to reach the Alagoa Viewpoint, one of the essentials in our Terceira guide, with its black lava flows pouring into the Atlantic and a completely wild pebble beach. If you like walking by the sea, trust us, you'll love this route.

Important! Make the most of your visit to the central and northwest area of Terceira and don't miss the following spots near these trails:

EASTERN, NORTHEASTERN AND SOUTHEASTERN PART OF THE ISLAND:

The east and southeast area of Terceira is perfect for combining coast, nature, and history. Here the star is the coastline, with its natural pools and old fortifications, and we bring you a trail that has it all.

3. São Sebastião Forts Trail, history and coast

The PR05TER - São Sebastião Forts is, in our view, perfect if you want to enjoy a trail with coastal scenery, lush vegetation, and a good dose of history. In fact, it's one of our favorite trails on the island.

PR05TER - Fortes de São Sebastião - The Best Hiking Trails in Terceira, Azores

It runs through the Cinco Picos volcanic massif, on the southeast coast, and its main draw is the remains of old maritime defense fortifications built between the 16th and 17th centuries to protect Terceira from attacks by sea.

Along the way you'll come across several of these structures—like the Greta and Santa Catarina de Mós forts, or the Forte do Pesqueiro dos Meninos—perched over the ocean, with views of the Contendas lighthouse and the Cabras Islet in the distance. The trail ends in the Vila de São Sebastião, passing an old water mill and small chapels.

It's the most interesting way to discover this heritage, so we encourage you to do it. And if you don't feel like the full route, we at least recommend driving the road that hugs this part of the coast and stopping by Ponta das Contendas or the Salga Natural Pools, very close by. You'll find all the info on our São Sebastião Forts page.

Important! Make the most of your visit to the east and southeast area of Terceira and don't miss the following spots near this trail:

ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO AND SURROUNDINGS:

Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the heart of the island. And right next to it rises one of the visits we consider absolutely essential in Terceira, which you can also enjoy on foot.

4. Monte Brasil Trail, an essential next to Angra

We'll finish with the PRC04TER - Monte Brasil. We'll be honest with you: compared to the previous three, we don't think it's the most spectacular (it's gorgeous, mind you). But visiting Monte Brasil is an essential on your trip to Terceira, and we think hiking it on this trail is a much better option than driving up.

PRC04TER - Monte Brasil - The Best Hiking Trails in Terceira, Azores

The Monte Brasil is an extinct volcano joined to Angra do Heroísmo that forms a peninsula with spectacular views of the bay and the city. The route starts next to the Relvão park, climbs toward the Fortress of São João Baptista, and links together viewpoints, remains of old fortifications, and wooded areas full of birds and endemic plants. You'll pass Pico do Facho (the highest point) and Pico das Cruzinhas, the landmark viewpoint over Angra. On clear days, the views reach as far as the islands of São Jorge and Pico.

That said, our favorite way to discover Monte Brasil is by bike. Hiking it or driving up is great, but we love doing it on a guided e-bike tour: you comfortably reach corners that are harder to access on foot and, thanks to the guide, you discover historical and natural details you'd otherwise miss on your own. We tell you all about it on our Monte Brasil page.

FAQs about hiking in Terceira 2026

1. What is the best trail in Terceira?

For us, without a doubt, the Mistérios Negros (PRC01TER). If you can only hike one trail on the island, make it that one: the volcanic landscape it crosses, with its cones born from the 1761 eruption, is like nothing you've seen before.

2. Are the trails in Terceira difficult?

There's something for every level. Baías da Agualva is easy and suitable for almost anyone; Monte Brasil and the Forts are moderate; and Mistérios Negros is rated difficult, though in practice it only has one truly demanding stretch. Something typical of the Azores is that the ground tends to be damp, so the right footwear makes more of a difference than the elevation gain.

3. Can you do several trails in a single day?

Yes, and it's a good strategy for making the most of your trip. Mistérios Negros and Baías da Agualva are both in the central and northwest area, and they complement each other really well: one shows you the volcanic interior and the other the north coast. Since distances in Terceira are short (you can cross the island in under an hour), moving between trails is very convenient.

4. When is the best time to go hiking in Terceira?

You can hike year-round thanks to the Azores' mild oceanic climate, with no extremes of cold or heat. The months from June to September tend to be the driest and most stable, ideal for the coastal routes. That said, weather in Terceira changes very fast and it can rain and clear up on the same day, so it pays to stay flexible with your plans.

5. Do you need a guide or permits for these trails?

No. They're official signposted trails (the PR and PRC trails of the Azores network) and you can download the GPS track from their page, so you can do them on your own with no problem. The exception is if you want a more comfortable experience at Monte Brasil, where we really enjoyed the guided e-bike option.

6. Do I need travel insurance to go hiking in Terceira?

It's not mandatory, but we recommend it, especially on slightly more demanding trails like Mistérios Negros or on coastal stretches where a silly fall can ruin your trip. Good insurance covers any medical mishap for just a few euros a day and lets you travel much more at ease. You can get yours with a 5% discount here.

And that's a wrap on our post with the best trails in Terceira!
