10. Serra do Cume Viewpoint
The Serra do Cume Viewpoint is one of the most impressive viewpoints on Terceira. It sits atop the result of an ancient volcanic eruption, at over 540 meters (1,770 feet) above sea level, giving you sweeping views of a large part of the island from a single spot. In 2008, a wooden viewing platform was also built from which you can comfortably take in both sides of this geological formation.
This viewpoint is famous for its views of the so-called "patchwork quilt" — the agricultural fields divided by volcanic stone walls and hydrangea hedges that form an incredible mosaic, something you have most likely never seen before.
From one side of the viewpoint you can see the city of Praia da Vitória, its enclosed bay, and the Lajes Air Base. On the other side, the interior plain stretches out, with ancient volcanic domes and lush vegetation — a landscape that changes with the light throughout the day. For that reason, if you have time, we encourage you to visit at different times of day, especially at sunset.
Without a doubt, for us this is the best viewpoint on Terceira.
