15. Humberto Delgado Viewpoint

The Humberto Delgado Viewpoint offers wide-ranging views of the bay of Praia da Vitória and a large stretch of the eastern coast of Terceira. But what really draws people here are the views of the airport runway and the Lajes Air Base, as this viewpoint is the perfect spot to watch planes land and take off.

In fact, the Lajes Air Base is located right next door. The original airfield dates back to 1934 and was significantly expanded during World War II due to its strategic position in the Atlantic. Since then it has been used by the United States and the United Kingdom, and it remains a key point for military operations to this day. Although access is restricted, a large part of its facilities can be seen from this viewpoint, along with flags and symbols that reflect the American presence on the island.

You can visit the Humberto Delgado Viewpoint on the same day as Praia da Vitória, given how close they are, but it is also a great stop if you are heading to the airport or have just arrived on Terceira, as it is right nearby and you can enjoy the views without going too far out of your way.
