With this 5-day Terceira itinerary, you'll get to enjoy its spectacular volcanic interior, swim in natural lava pools, hike the best trails, and visit its incredible capital, Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage city.

By the way! For this itinerary, we'll assume you're staying in Angra do Heroísmo, so the routes are designed to make the most of your time from there, although the distances are so short that it won't make much difference if you stay somewhere else.
DAY 1 of your 5-day Terceira trip
POINTS OF INTEREST:
We're starting strong, in the volcanic heart of Terceira, the Central Plateau, where some of the island's most impressive sights are concentrated—and very close to one another, too.
DAY 1 MORNING – TERCEIRA IN 5 DAYS
Start the day by hiking the Misterios Negros trail (PRC01 TER), our favorite on the whole island. This trail starts at the Negro Lagoon parking lot, right in front of Gruta do Natal, and crosses a unique volcanic cryptomeria forest. If you only have the chance to hike one trail in Terceira, we recommend this one—it's spectacular.
When you've finished the trail, take a few minutes to enjoy the Negro Lagoon, a small lagoon surrounded by forest, beneath which—interestingly—run the lava tubes of Gruta do Natal.
Afterward, if you're not hungry yet, a few minutes away by car you can visit the Furnas do Enxofre, one of the places where you can best tell that Terceira is still a living volcanic island. It's a fumarole field that you walk through on a wooden boardwalk loop a little under half a mile long, flat and free, in about 30-40 minutes. You'll see steam rising from the ground and areas stained yellow by sulfur.
Then, if you feel like a quiet stop, the Patas Lagoon is very close by, with a picnic area among cryptomeria trees and ducks strolling along the shore (hence its name). This is a good spot to grab a bite while you wait for Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal to open, two of Terceira's must-sees.
In case you have more time at the Patas Lagoon, you should know that a roughly 4-mile loop trail also starts from this point.
For lunch, we recommend eating at the Patas Lagoon picnic area since there are no restaurants right there, although 10 minutes away by car is one of our favorite restaurants, Taberna Roberto.
DAY 1 AFTERNOON – TERCEIRA IN 5 DAYS
After lunch, it's time to visit two unique places that are a must-stop in Terceira. Gruta do Natal is a lava tube nearly 2,300 feet long, flat and easy to walk, famous for the masses held inside it since 1969.
And Algar do Carvão is a truly unique experience. You go down more than 300 steps to about 300 feet deep to literally step inside a volcano, with its lava walls and a lagoon at the bottom.
IMPORTANT! Gruta do Natal and Algar do Carvão only open in the afternoon. Algar do Carvão has been under construction since 2024 for the building of its new visitor center. It has been reopening on a conditional basis, but it may close without notice. Always check its official website before going.
When both are operating normally, we recommend buying the combined ticket for Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal (€15).
And to wrap up the day, head up to the Serra de Santa Bárbara Viewpoint, the highest point in Terceira, at 3,350 feet. From here, a huge panorama of the island's interior opens up and, on clear days, you can even see São Jorge and Pico. It's one of the areas where clouds gather most, so if you arrive and it's overcast, wait a few minutes—it'll most likely clear up.

DAY 2 of your 5-day Terceira trip

We dedicate the second day to Angra do Heroísmo and its surroundings, the most historic and beautiful part of the island. We'll combine sea, city, and nature in a single day.
DAY 2 MORNING – TERCEIRA IN 5 DAYS
If there's one activity you can't miss in Terceira, it's whale and dolphin watching. The trips set off from the Angra harbor and last about three hours, sailing along the south coast in an experience that's respectful of the animals. With luck, you'll see dolphins, pilot whales, and even huge blue whales.
There's a version that also includes getting closer to the Cabras Islets, which we recommend if you want to see this wonder up close.
Back on land, lose yourself in the historic center of Angra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. In two or three hours on foot you'll have time to see the essentials: the Praça Velha with the statue of Vasco da Gama, the Cathedral of Santo Salvador, the blue-and-white façade of the Igreja da Misericórdia, and the imposing Palácio dos Capitães-Generais. The best part is that feeling of traveling back in time among churches and very colorful cobblestone streets.

For lunch, we recommend Fumeiro de Sao Joao or, if you'd prefer something more casual and budget-friendly, A Barrica.
DAY 2 AFTERNOON – TERCEIRA IN 5 DAYS
After lunch at a good Terceira restaurant, keep discovering the city at your own pace. Very close to the old town is the Duque de Terceira Garden, founded in 1882, with century-old araucaria trees.
At its highest point stands the Alto da Memória, an obelisk from 1856 with one of the best views of Angra and from where you can really appreciate how the city is laid out.
That said, for us, the highlight of the afternoon is Monte Brasil, an extinct volcano joined to the city that forms a peninsula full of viewpoints. You can go up by car or on foot via the PRC04 TER trail, although we chose to discover it with this guided e-bike tour, which lets you comfortably reach corners that are harder to get to on foot while you pick up historical details along the way.
Inside it is the Fortress of São João Baptista, one of the largest in Portugal (1592). If you want to see it from the inside, the guided tour runs Wednesday to Sunday, with advance booking and for €5, although if you're short on time, just peeking from outside during your tour of Monte Brasil is enough.
And if you still have afternoon left and the weather's nice, top off the day with a swim right in the city. You can choose between the Prainha Swimming Area, the only sandy beach in the bay, or Fanal Bay, more natural and wild, with gorgeous views of Monte Brasil.
Another option to end the day is heading over to São Mateus da Calheta, the most seafaring village on the island, with a fishing harbor full of charm at sunset.

DAY 3 of your 5-day Terceira trip
POINTS OF INTEREST:
Today we explore the north and west coast of Terceira, an area of natural lava pools, seaside viewpoints, and a lot of calm. A perfect day to alternate between swims and scenery.
DAY 3 MORNING – TERCEIRA IN 5 DAYS
We love starting the day with a good hike, so for today we can't help but recommend the Baías da Agualva trail (PR2 TER), about 2.5 miles, a spectacular coastal walk along the north of the island that takes you all the way to the Alagoa Viewpoint, with lava cliffs and a totally wild pebble beach. Si decides recorrerlo, ten en cuenta que te llevará unas 2 horas (ida y vuelta), and if you don’t feel like doing the whole thing, you can just walk a section.
And just nearby, if you feel like kicking off the day with a first dip after your walk, there’s the Escaleiras Swimming Area, in Vila Nova. It has a wide concrete deck with metal stairs down to the water, a shallow natural pool and areas for swimming, plus a bar and amazing views of the coast from up top.
Then, continue by exploring the natural pools along the north coast. Start with the ones at Quatro Ribeiras, calmer than the ones at Biscoitos, which also has a built pool that's ideal for going with kids. Right next door, you can't miss the lovely Miradouro dos Moinhos.
Afterward, visit the next swimming area, the Calheta dos Lagadores, an area of black volcanic rock perfect for snorkeling, right next to some small WWII military trenches that you can walk through for free along their corridors carved into the basalt.
The big stop of the day is the Biscoitos Natural Pools, the most famous on the island. They're lava pools protected from the surf, with crystal-clear water and lots of fish, perfect for swimming and diving (so bring goggles). In summer the water is around 70°F. That said, in high season, we recommend arriving before 10:00 a.m. to enjoy them without the crowds, since they're the ones that fill up most.
Biscoitos is also wine country, so take the chance to stop by the Wine Museum, free of charge, where you'll discover the Verdelho tradition among volcanic stone walls.
For lunch, we strongly recommend Restaurante Caneta, in Altares, where you can try what's reputed to be the best Alcatra in Terceira, the island's traditional dish. Trust us, you'll love it. That said, you must book in advance on their website since it's quite in demand.
DAY 3 AFTERNOON – TERCEIRA IN 5 DAYS
In the afternoon, in the Altares area you can stop at Matias Simão Peak, a small volcanic cone with views of the green fields divided by stone walls and, on clear days, all the way to Graciosa island. And there's almost certainly no one else around, since you have to walk up a somewhat steep slope, so if you feel like it, you'll enjoy these Terceira views in total peace.
Afterward, head to Serreta, the westernmost area and one of the best spots on the island to watch the sunset, with viewpoints like Ponta do Queimado, the Farol da Serreta, and the Mata da Serreta. Very close by is Lagoinha, a small crater lagoon surrounded only by endemic vegetation, something pretty unusual in the Azores. Plus, if you feel like walking, the PRC03 TER trail passes through here.
Before getting back to Angra, if you’re still up for one last dip, you’ve got two swimming areas right next to each other: the Cinco Ribeiras Swimming Area and the Negrito Swimming Area, two sheltered, easy-to-reach saltwater natural pools, perfect for a relaxed swim at this time of day. And if you’d rather not swim, don’t worry, because the last stop of the day will win you over just the same.
But if you're not in the mood for a swim, don't worry—there's another stop on the way to Angra that you'll love. If you like cheese paired with good wine, we recommend stopping at Queijo Vaquinha, where they make artisan cheese with milk from their own farm. Order a small board to try several types of cheese paired with a glass of wine and sit back on their terrace. Can you think of a better way to end the day?

DAY 4 of your 5-day Terceira trip

Day 4 we dedicate to the south and southeast coast of Terceira, a string of seaside viewpoints, natural pools and, as the stars of the show, the famous Cabras Islets.
DAY 4 MORNING – TERCEIRA IN 5 DAYS
The Cabras Islets are two volcanic islets off the south coast, the largest in the whole archipelago, and one of the most recognizable images of Terceira. Access to them is protected, so the best way to see them up close is from the sea, with a boat tour, a whale and dolphin watching tour that gets close to the islets or by snorkeling in their waters.
If you don't have the opportunity to take any tours around the Islets, the best way to see them from land is by combining several viewpoints you'll find along the southern coast. If you're coming from Angra, start with the Fajã do Fisher, a lava platform with a small viewpoint, the Cruz do Canário Viewpoint (for us, the one with the best views of the Islets), and the Maria Augusta de Castro Viewpoint. Following the road, you'll find a few more small viewpoints, so keep your eyes open.
In this same Porto Judeu area is the Gruta das Agulhas, a lava tube with curious needle-shaped formations that, while you can't go inside, can be appreciated from outside after going down the stairs that lead to its entrance (we've put the exact location on the map).
And if you feel like a swim in this area, you can stop at the Refugo Natural Pool, which is in a quiet, uncrowded spot set on volcanic rock formed by the lava flows of Algar do Carvão.
To eat in this area and very close to this natural pool, we recommend Restaurante Preguiça.
DAY 4 AFTERNOON – TERCEIRA IN 5 DAYS
In the afternoon, you can stop at the Salga Natural Pools, in a small protected bay with a pool that's ideal for swimming without waves, located right next to the remains of the Forte das Caravelas.
Afterward, Porto Martins is a must-stop for its natural pools: the Porto Martins Natural Pools (the largest and most popular), the Baía das Canas (calmer, with shallow water), and the Poça do Porto de São Fernando (a more intimate, sheltered spot).
If you don't feel like swimming or the weather's not great, you can walk this very easy coastal route of about 1.7 miles to enjoy the volcanic scenery all the same.
On the way to Praia da Vitória, we recommend one last stop at Riviera Beach, a small beach that stays almost wild, with sand surrounded by rock and a few reed beds where migratory birds take shelter.
Spend the end of the day in Praia da Vitória, one of the liveliest towns on the island and a good place to rest and swim. Here you'll find some of Terceira's few sandy beaches, with Blue Flag status, and a lovely seaside promenade.
To get the best view of the town, head up to the Miradouro do Facho to see it all from above.
By the way! If you visit Terceira in August, don't miss the festivals of Praia da Vitória. They're about 10 days of fireworks, concerts, and parades that bring together almost the whole island. They're among the best festivals in the Azores.
DAY 5 of your 5-day Terceira trip

DAY 5 UNTIL YOUR FLIGHT HOME – TERCEIRA IN 5 DAYS
If you feel like starting this last day by stretching your legs, a great option is the São Sebastião Forts trail (PR05 TER), one of our favorite trails in Terceira. It’s a circular route of about 5.4 miles through countryside, coastline and 16th- and 17th-century fortifications, with the Castelo de São Sebastião as the star. And if you don’t want to do the whole thing, just walking a section or driving along the road that hugs this part of the coast is enough to enjoy the scenery all the same.
Very close by, at the southeastern tip of the island, is Ponta das Contendas and its Contendas Lighthouse, a 1934 lighthouse built on a clifftop to guide navigation through the island’s eastern waters. The lighthouse is usually closed, but it’s worth stopping by to wander around and enjoy the views, with the Cabras Islets in the background.
And now, get ready, because we've saved the best viewpoint in Terceira for the last day: the Serra do Cume Viewpoint. From its wooden platform, at more than 1,770 feet, you can see the famous "patchwork quilt": the fields divided by volcanic stone walls and hydrangea hedges that form a mosaic you've probably never seen anywhere else. On one side you'll see Praia da Vitória and its bay. On the other, the inland plain. If you can, visit it at different times, because it changes a lot with the light.
If you have time, take the chance afterward to go back to any spot you may have left pending. And before reaching the airport, don't forget to stop by the Humberto Delgado Viewpoint, next to Lajes Air Base, the perfect place to watch planes land and take off, and to see the military base. Don't tell us it isn't a great finishing touch to your Terceira trip, on top of being right on the way to the airport.
