8. Ponta das Contendas and Contendas Lighthouse
Ponta das Contendas is a spot that truly deserves a stop on the southern coast of Terceira. This is where the Contendas Lighthouse stands, built at a strategic point on a high cliff to guide navigation in the eastern waters of the island, inaugurated on February 1, 1934. The lighthouse is normally closed, so the visit consists of exploring the surroundings and enjoying the views, from where you'll be able to see the Cabras Islets.
In addition to its scenic interest, Ponta das Contendas is a Special Protection Zone, essential for the conservation of seabirds and native flora, and remnants of fortifications built between the 16th and 17th centuries are also preserved here.
We recommend taking your time, walking around, and enjoying whatever hidden corners you come across. If you're coming from the Salga Natural Pools, you can also take the opportunity to visit the Forte das Caravelas. And if you feel like discovering more fortifications, the best way is by hiking the São Sebastião Forts Trail, one of our favorite trails on Terceira. We can assure you that you won't regret it.
