7. Salga Natural Pools
The Salga Natural Pools, also known as Praia da Salga, are one of the most comfortable swimming areas on the southern coast of Terceira. They are located in a small, fairly sheltered bay, which means the sea is usually not too rough — something that makes them a very popular spot with families and locals alike.
The area is right by the road and has an esplanade from which you can easily access the water. There are stairs for getting directly into the sea and a small pool that fills up with the tide, ideal if you prefer to swim without waves. There is also a concrete pool, slightly elevated above sea level, that is naturally refreshed by the ocean waves.
This swimming area is free, with restrooms nearby and a bar right across the road, perfect for grabbing something after your swim. There is parking close by, making it a very easy stop if you are driving along the southern coast.
Right next door are the remains of the Forte das Caravelas, a small historic fort that you can visit in just a few minutes. From here you'll have great views of Praia da Salga (the same ones shown in the photo above).
These natural pools are located along the road that runs along the southern coast of Terceira, between the Gruta das Agulhas area and the Contendas Lighthouse. So even if the weather is not ideal for swimming, we encourage you to stop anyway and walk over to the fort to enjoy the views from this point on the coast.
