5. Refugo Natural Pool
The Refugo Natural Pool, in Porto Judeu, is a swimming area on volcanic rock with direct sea access. The coastline is made up of large black basalt stones and volcanic lava fragments, the result of the eruption of the Algar do Carvão volcano.
It is a very pleasant place to swim, with lifeguard supervision and a small play area. There is no sandy beach, but the water is calm and crystal clear, perfect for enjoying the sea in a beautiful natural setting. It also tends not to get too crowded, making it ideal if you prefer to avoid the masses.
The Refugo Natural Pool is very close to Fajã do Fisher and the Maria Augusta de Castro Viewpoint and the Cruz do Canário Viewpoint, from where you can see the Cabras Islets, so we recommend taking the opportunity to visit all these spots on the same day while exploring the southern coast of the island.
