3. Cruz do Canário Viewpoint
The Cruz do Canário Viewpoint is one of the best spots to see the Cabras Islets, two small volcanic islets off the coast. From here you can also see Monte Brasil to the right and Porto Judeu to the left, offering a very complete panoramic view of southern Terceira.
It is a comfortable and easy-to-access viewpoint, with parking right by the road and a small walkway nearby where you can take a leisurely stroll. It also features a swing facing the islets — designed more for photos than for actual swinging — that has become one of the most photographed spots at the location.
It has traditionally also been a birdwatching area — in fact, its name comes from the presence of canaries in the past — and it is not uncommon to see seabirds flying overhead. If you are exploring the southern part of the island, it is a highly recommended stop for enjoying one of the best views of the islets from the mainland.
Very close by are also Fajã do Fisher and the Maria Augusta de Castro Viewpoint, two other spots from where you can also see the islets. That said, we would go so far as to say that the Cruz do Canário Viewpoint offers the most complete and spectacular views of all of them, which is why we always recommend it as a must-stop when exploring this stretch of the southern coast.
