2. Duque de Terceira Garden
The Duque de Terceira Garden is one of the best-known spots in Angra do Heroísmo. It was founded in 1882 as a plant acclimatization garden and, since then, it has grown and become a beautiful natural space right in the heart of the city, perfect for discovering even more of the island's history and culture.
As you stroll through it, you'll be able to see species from all over the world, such as centuries-old araucarias and magnolias. And don't forget to look down at the cobblestones — they are decorated with designs paying tribute to both historical figures and different plant species, a detail that not everyone notices and that gives the garden a very special touch.
In the garden, you can't miss Alto da Memória, one of the best viewpoints in Angra do Heroísmo from the city center, and the Tanque do Preto, a giant pond built by Franciscan friars with an 18th-century statue at one end. The locals affectionately call this curious statue "O Preto," and it also doubles as a fountain, continuously spouting water.
We recommend taking your time exploring the garden, paying attention to the details, and even sitting down on one of its benches to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere right in the heart of Angra. In our experience, 1 hour is enough to see it properly and enjoy it without feeling rushed.
