10. Calheta dos Lagadores Swimming Area
Calheta dos Lagadores Swimming Area is a small swimming area on the northern coast of Terceira, much quieter than other spots in this part of the island. It is a simple place, without too many facilities, but with a lot of charm.
It consists of a small rocky peninsula formed by natural pools of varying depths. It is not an enclosed pool like the ones at Biscoitos — here the sea is more open and access is via stairs. This option will appeal to you if you enjoy swimming in the open ocean.
Something we love about Calheta dos Lagadores Swimming Area is the contrast between the black volcanic rock and the blue of the ocean — a truly beautiful landscape. It is also a great spot for snorkeling, where you can spot species such as barracuda, grouper, white seabream, moray eels, and octopus.
Something very interesting right next door are the old military trenches built during World War II, which were part of the island's defense system. Today you can visit them and walk through their corridors carved into the rock — a unique and unusual experience that you don't get every day.
Calheta dos Lagadores Swimming Area is located between the famous Biscoitos Natural Pools and Quatro Ribeiras Beach, making them easy to combine in the same day while exploring the northern coast of Terceira.
