11. Military Trenches

The military trenches are made of volcanic rock and were part of Terceira's defense system during World War II. They were equipped with machine guns and mortars and worked in coordination with the Forte de São Pedro and the Forte da Rua Longa.

These trenches are fairly well preserved and can be visited freely. Access is free and they are open all day, so you can stop by without any issue and walk through their corridors carved into the basalt. They are small and can be seen quickly, but walking through them while looking out at the sea they once defended is a unique and unusual experience that you don't get every day.

They are also located right next to the Calheta dos Lagadores Swimming Area, so we recommend that when you visit the trenches, you take the opportunity to swim in these natural pools or take a stroll along the coast.
