9. Biscoitos Natural Pools

The Biscoitos Natural Pools are the best-known and most popular on Terceira and, in our opinion, also among the most beautiful. They are located on the northern coast and are a must-stop if you visit the island, both in summer and in winter.

These famous pools were formed between lava flows and today create several natural pools sheltered from the waves, with calm and fairly clear water. They are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, so don't forget your goggles, as there are plenty of fish. In summer the water temperature is around 70°F (21°C) and it feels really great.

The area is well set up, with lifeguards on duty in season, showers, restrooms, a snack bar, and free parking. The one downside is that it tends to get quite crowded and can feel a little overwhelming if you prefer peace and quiet, especially on sunny summer days. We recommend visiting first thing in the morning, before 10:00 AM, if you want to enjoy a swim without the crowds.

Biscoitos is also wine country. Very close to the pools you'll see the typical curraletas — small vineyards surrounded by volcanic stone walls that protect the vines from the wind and salt. If you're interested, you can visit the Wine Museum, which is free and helps you better understand this local tradition.

And if you feel like continuing to explore the northern coast, the Calheta dos Lagadores Natural Pools are just a few minutes away by car, located next to some old World War II trenches — a great combination to round out the day in this area.
