8. Matias Simão Peak
Matias Simão Peak is a small volcanic cone located in the Altares area, in the northwest of Terceira. It is not one of the most famous viewpoints on the island, but for us it is a highly recommended stop if you are exploring this part of the coast.
From the top, at an altitude of 153 meters (500 feet), you'll have beautiful views of the green fields divided by volcanic stone walls, with the ocean right alongside. That contrast between the green blanket of fields and the blue of the Atlantic is what makes this place special. On a clear day, you can even spot the island of Graciosa in the distance.
To get there, you'll need to drive along a dirt track and leave the car at the end. From there, it's about a 10-minute walk up a small hill and a set of stairs to the summit. At the top you'll find a stone monument with a cross and views over both the village of Altares and the sea. The best part about this viewpoint is that, in all likelihood, you'll have it all to yourself.
If you're visiting this area, the restaurant Caneta is very close by, in the village of Altares, known for its alcatra (the Terceira-style pot roast), one of the most traditional dishes of Terceira. After trying several versions across the island, we can confirm that, for us, this is the best one. That said, we recommend booking ahead, especially during peak season.
