8. Fanal Bay
Fanal Bay is a swimming area in Angra do Heroísmo that will surprise you with its wilder, more natural feel. The water is crystal clear, with a darker tone thanks to the rocks, and the coastline has plenty of space to lay out your towel without feeling crowded. But what we love most are the stunning views of Monte Brasil and its lush green surroundings, making this bay a perfect place to swim and unwind in the city.
But it hasn't always been this way. In the early 20th century, the bay was a very popular bathing spot, with a platform you could use to enter the water. Over time, erosion and the 1980 earthquakes caused the shoreline to recede almost 40 meters, limiting direct access to the sea for several decades.
But don't worry. Today, following coastal protection works, you can safely get to the water and enjoy the natural surroundings, the peace and quiet, and the sea. Although there is no sand, it is a comfortable and safe area for a swim, so anyone can enjoy it, even with kids.
And if you'd like to visit more swimming spots in Angra, the Prainha Swimming Area is very close by — a sandy beach in the city with a more urban vibe.
