10. Negrito Swimming Area
The Negrito Swimming Area is located in São Mateus da Calheta, next to the old Forte do Negrito, and is one of the most popular swimming spots in this part of Terceira Island. That said, don't expect a sandy beach — here the star of the show is the volcanic basalt, which forms wide, fairly comfortable platforms perfect for spending the day and swimming safely.
The bay has a flat seabed, which is a real plus when it comes to swimming, and features a natural pool sheltered from the waves, perfect for a relaxed dip among volcanic rocks. Getting into the water is easy and safe, even when the sea is a little rougher.
There is also plenty of space to spread out your towel, soak up the sun, and enjoy the surroundings without feeling crowded. Between the volcanic landscape, the sea, and the remains of the 16th-century fort right next door, it is a very pleasant spot both for swimming and for taking a break to enjoy the more rugged, maritime side of Terceira.
